Leaders, theologians, and grassroots voices from across the global communion gathered in Jakarta this week for the “Widening the Circle” consultation, a three-day process convened by the World Communion of Reformed Churches (WCRC). Held from March 18–20, 2026, the consultation marked a significant step in shaping the Communion’s strategic planning process through participatory dialogue and inclusive theological reflection.
Rooted each day in Bible study and prayer, the consultation created a rhythm of discernment alongside structured planning.
The consultation consisted of thematic deep dives, reflecting the breadth of concerns shaping the global Reformed witness. Sessions on gender, sexuality, and the body brought together theologians, underscoring the urgency of inclusive theological frameworks that respond to lived realities. Later sessions expanded the conversation to mission, ecology, Indigenous voices, feminist theology, disability, and youth voices, highlighting intersectional approaches to justice and belonging within the church.
The final day brought focus to reconciliation, interfaith relations, and migration—issues increasingly central to the Communion’s global context. Participants emphasized the need for churches to act as agents of peace in fragmented societies.
Throughout the consultation, participants reflected on key themes and proposed actionable pathways forward that will inform the WCRC’s ongoing strategic development.
A recurring theme was the call to move beyond abstract language toward embodied, intersectional approaches that center the voices of marginalized communities.
As the consultation concluded, participants called for horizontal, non-hierarchical relationships grounded in shared commitment. They emphasized the importance of joyful resistance, particularly in marginalized communities, and critiqued performative inclusion—such as accessibility checklists that ignore deeper issues of attitude and belonging.
The outcomes of Widening the Circle will inform the ongoing development of the WCRC’s strategic framework, ensuring that voices from across regions, identities, and experiences are not only heard but centered. The consultation advocated deconstructing the table and building a new one where everyone is invited and has a seat at the Lord’s table.
