The World Communion of Reformed Churches (WCRC) invites member churches and Christians across the globe to come together in prayer, reflection, and action for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity 2025, to be observed from January 18–25, 2025. This year’s theme, “Do you believe this?” (John 11:26), draws inspiration from the deeply personal encounter between Jesus and Martha, emphasizing the power of faith in the resurrection as a source of hope and justice.
This year’s theme highlights Jesus’ transformative dialogue with Martha in the Gospel of John. Following the death of her brother Lazarus, Martha hears Jesus’ declaration: “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live; indeed, whoever lives and believes in me will never die” (John 11:25–26). Jesus then asks Martha, “Do you believe this?”—a question that calls for both a profound personal and collective response of faith.
Early Christians, inspired by these words, sought to articulate their shared beliefs through creeds such as the Nicene Creed, affirming their hope in the resurrection. Today, this theme invites Christians worldwide to examine their faith, act on their beliefs, and share the joy and hope of the resurrection with others, fostering unity and justice in a divided world.
As a global community representing over 230 member churches in more than 100 countries, the WCRC remains steadfast in its mission to promote Christian unity while addressing the urgent challenges of justice, equality, and ecological stewardship. The Week of Prayer’s focus on faith and justice aligns with the WCRC’s core initiatives, including the Accra Confession, advocacy for gender equity, and efforts to combat climate change.
“We pray for unity and healing in a divided world. In the face of global challenges and rampant injustice, we are called to be united in purpose, standing together as one in our commitment to justice, peace, and love. This Week of Prayer for Christian Unity serves as a reminder that our faith must be lived out in action, keeping the words of God in our hearts and reflecting God’s love in our lives. May this week renew our spirits and strengthen our resolve to act in unity for the common good of all,” said Rev. Dr. Setri Nyomi, general secretary of the World Communion of Reformed Churches.
In an era marked by division and inequity, the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is a call to embody the faith we profess. The WCRC urges all Christians to seize this opportunity to reflect on their belief in the resurrection, act in solidarity with those in need, and work toward a world shaped by God’s justice and love.
“When we respond to Jesus’ question with a resounding yes, our faith propels us to be agents of hope, healing, and reconciliation,” said Nyomi.
For the year 2025, the prayers and reflections for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity were prepared by the brothers and sisters of the monastic community of Bose in northern Italy. The resources are jointly published by the Dicastery for Promoting Christian Unity and the World Council of Churches.
