The World Communion of Reformed Churches (WCRC) has extended warm congratulations to Rt. Rev. Rt. Hon. Dame Sarah Mullally, who has been appointed Archbishop of Canterbury, becoming the first woman to hold the historic office.
Rev. Dr. Setri Nyomi, general secretary of the WCRC, called Mullally’s appointment a milestone for the global church and a sign of growing inclusivity and faithful leadership.
“This is a moment of great joy and hope for the global church,” Nyomi said. “Archbishop-designate Mullally’s leadership and witness embody a deep commitment to faithful service, justice, and inclusion—values that resonate profoundly with our Reformed vision of the church as a community called to transform the world in Christ’s love.”
Nyomi emphasized that the WCRC joins with Christians around the world in praying for Mullally as she prepares to take on what he called “a sacred and demanding responsibility” during a time of significant social, economic, and spiritual challenge.
“We assure her of our prayers as she takes up this sacred responsibility,” Nyomi added. “We look forward to continued partnership with the Anglican Communion in our shared calling to unity, justice, and peace.”
Mullally has served as Bishop of London since 2018, where she became known for her pastoral sensitivity, administrative strength, and advocacy for the role of women in the church. Before entering ordained ministry, she had a distinguished career in nursing and public health, including serving as England’s chief nursing officer.
Her installation as Archbishop of Canterbury is scheduled for March 2026 at Canterbury Cathedral, where she will succeed Archbishop Justin Welby. Her appointment marks a historic step forward for the Church of England and the wider global communion in affirming the leadership and gifts of women in ministry.
