In a heartfelt Christmas message, Rev. Najla Kassab, president of the World Communion of Reformed Churches (WCRC), and Rev. Dr. Setri Nyomi, general secretary, call upon the global church to celebrate the season with hope and perseverance despite the challenges facing the world.

Reflecting on the biblical story of Christmas, they highlight the perseverance of Mary and Joseph in the face of adversity, drawing parallels to the struggles experienced by communities worldwide.

From regions torn by war, such as Ukraine and the Middle East, to those enduring long-standing challenges like the embargo in Cuba, political extremism, climate catastrophe, and social marginalization, the message emphasizes solidarity and faith in God’s presence amid trials.

“How will we celebrate Christmas in the midst of all these challenges?” the leaders ask, reminding believers that just as Mary and Joseph trusted in God’s plan, today’s church must continue to trust in the hope and promise of Emmanuel—God with us.

Drawing inspiration from John 1:14, which proclaims, “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us,” they encourage the WCRC’s global community to reflect on the birth of Christ as a source of strength and resilience.

“As a communion, we will celebrate Christmas despite all the challenges,” the message reads, pointing to milestones such as the 20th anniversary of the Accra Confession and the upcoming WCRC General Council in Chiang Mai, Thailand. These events serve as opportunities to witness God’s glory, unite in hope, and reaffirm the church’s commitment to justice, peace, and care for creation.

The leaders conclude by invoking Mary’s Song of Praise from the Gospel of Luke: “My soul glorifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God, my Savior,” affirming that joy and strength are rooted in faith, even amid the world’s trials.

Kassab and Nyomi urge the church to carry forward the message of Christmas—a reminder that even in the darkest times, hope is born, and God is with us.

Have a joyful and blessed Christmas!
