The World Communion of Reformed Churches (WCRC) is pleased to announce a call for applications for the fourth cohort (2026–2027) of the GRAPE Training Programme (Global Reformed Advocacy Platforms for Engagement). This innovative advocacy and leadership programme equips churches, researchers and civil society actors to confront economic injustice and the climate crisis through research, theological reflection and sustained public advocacy.

Implemented in Kenya and South Africa, GRAPE is a five-year initiative designed by WCRC in partnership with the Economic Policy Research Institute (EPRI). Rooted in the theological commitments of the Accra Confession, the programme addresses the interlocking injustices of race, gender, class and climate that continue to force millions into poverty and precarity.

About the GRAPE Programme

GRAPE accompanies WCRC member churches, researchers and activists as they lead long-term national advocacy campaigns. Over five years, five successive cohorts undertake intensive 18-month training cycles, ensuring continuity, local ownership and growing impact. Graduates remain actively engaged as alumni, strengthening advocacy efforts beyond their training period.

Participants conduct local participatory research, facilitate contextual Bible studies and build robust evidence for policy engagement. Through WCRC’s global network, local struggles gain international visibility and solidarity—moving advocacy from local to global and back to local.

National Advocacy Goals by 2028

  • Kenya: Universal right to water — 50 litres of clean drinking water per person per day, or equivalent compensation.
  • South Africa: A Universal Basic Income Grant (UBIG) of at least R760 per month for adults aged 18–59.

Programme Structure

The GRAPE training programme comprises four core modules:

  • Capacity Building — Intensive online and in-person training on economic justice, social transformation and climate action.
  • Theological Reflection — Contextual biblical and theological analysis for public engagement.
  • Research and Advocacy — Mentored participatory research and evidence-based policy advocacy, supported by EPRI.
  • Results-Based Management — Monitoring, learning and adaptation for high-impact advocacy outcomes.

The fourth GRAPE cohort runs for 18 months, from March 2026 to August 2027, and participants are encouraged to remain involved beyond the formal training period. The programme uses a hybrid format, combining weekly online meetings with four in-person workshops and mentored team projects. Applications close 26 January 2026, and shortlisted candidates will be interviewed 9–13 February 2026.
