Siblings in Christ,
We call upon the churches of the World Communion of Reformed Churches (WCRC) to lift our voices in prayer for the young people of India, the Gen Z protesters in New Delhi and throughout India who are raising their cries for justice.
Since May, the “Cockroach” movement has grown from a painful insult into a satirical and determined campaign for accountability. Young people, students, professionals, and families have gathered across India in recent days, demanding reform after repeated leaks of high-stakes entrance exams for medical colleges and government jobs have shattered dreams and stolen futures. They seek the resignation of the Education Minister and compensation for families of students who have died by suicide following these exam scandals.
On 20 July, as the Indian Parliament convened for its monsoon session, these peaceful protesters attempted to march to Parliament to make their voices heard. Instead, they were met with tear gas and baton charges. The authorities deemed the march unauthorised and enforced restrictions around Parliament.
The Reformed tradition has always stood for the prophetic witness of speaking truth to power. The WCRC has consistently affirmed the rights of all people to participate in the life of their communities and nations. In their witness, these young protesters embody a righteous cry for the integrity of their nation’s institutions and the dignity of its youth. Their peaceful protest is an act of love for country and neighbour.
We invite you to join in this prayer and to hold the young people of India in your hearts.
A Prayer for the Protesters
God of justice and mercy,
We lift our voices to you on behalf of the young people of India, those who have gathered in New Delhi, those who have been dispersed, and those who continue to hope for a better future.
We pray for the students and families whose hearts have been broken by the corruption of systems meant to serve them. We remember especially those who have lost loved ones to despair and those who carry the weight of grief and anger.
We pray for the protesters across India. Give them strength, courage, and perseverance. Protect them from violence and harm. May they know that they are not alone, and that the God who hears the cries of the oppressed stands with them.
We pray for the leaders of India, for the Prime Minister, the Education Minister, and all who hold power. Stir their hearts to hear the voices of the young with humility. Grant them wisdom to address legitimate grievances and the humility to engage in honest dialogue. Break through the walls of pride and defensiveness, and open pathways to reconciliation and reform.
We pray for peace in the streets and justice in the halls of power. May the monsoon season that brings renewal to the land also bring a season of renewal to India’s institutions.
We ask that you pour out your Spirit of justice, truth, and peace upon India. We pray in the name of Jesus Christ, who was himself a young man who spoke truth to power, and who promises to be with us always.
