Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. —Ephesians 4:3-6

We have received word from the Presbyterian Church of Venezuela, our member church in that country, regarding the current economic and political turmoil the country is suffering through:

In the concrete case of this church we have to recognize that the sociopolitical phenomena present in the Venezuelan society in recent years have had a negative impact and have neutralized our witness, our action and our impact. Instead of assuming our role of Reformed church whose foundation is based on the Scripture, on our theology and on Reformed principles, instead of being the conscience of the State, we have become distracted by ideological confrontation, sometimes turning away from the bond that unites us, focusing solely on the differences that keep us apart. However, the very true words of Apostle Paul to the Ephesians [see above] resonate in our church.

We join the cry of 74 percent of Venezuelans who, according to the latest surveys, call for dialogue as the only way to solve this crisis that is drowning our country.

The Christian Reformed Church in North America’s Office of Social Justice has shared a prayer with its network, which we join in and call upon our member churches to pray as well:

For the people of Venezuela we pray, Lord. We pray for those who are hungry, who lack necessary medicine, who fear for their safety. We pray for economic stability and political wisdom, and we ask that you will move global leaders to pay attention to the worsening situation in Venezuela. Amen.
