Global Initiatives for Peace and Reconciliation: Cameroon

Cameroon, a country deeply affected by protracted conflict between its Anglophone and Francophone regions, remains a focus of the World Communion of Reformed Churches’ (WCRC) commitment to justice and peace. The ongoing violence has resulted in widespread suffering, with communities, including women, children, and the elderly, bearing the brunt of its devastating impact. Churches in Cameroon, notably WCRC member bodies such as the Presbyterian Church in Cameroon (PCC) and the Evangelical Church of Cameroon, continue to advocate for peace and serve as beacons of hope in these troubled times.

The crisis has escalated due to the historical grievances of marginalization in the Anglophone regions, leading to calls for secession and violent confrontations. As militias and government forces engage in hostilities, civilians are caught in the crossfire. Churches have been targeted, such as the attack on the Presbyterian Church in Ntanfoang-Bali, which claimed lives and underscored the peril facing communities of faith. WCRC partners have condemned these atrocities and called for accountability from all parties involved.

Globally, WCRC collaborates with ecumenical organizations to amplify calls for a ceasefire and dialogue-based solutions. This includes urging the Cameroonian government and separatist factions to halt violence and engage in inclusive peace talks. The WCRC’s call extends to its worldwide member churches to pray, advocate, and support initiatives for sustainable reconciliation in Cameroon. Efforts also involve providing humanitarian aid to displaced and vulnerable populations and seeking restorative justice measures to heal a fractured society.

The WCRC remains steadfast in its solidarity with Cameroon’s churches and communities, emphasizing that peace with justice and truth is essential for long-term reconciliation. By uniting global voices, the Communion seeks to foster a future where all Cameroonians can live in dignity and harmony.
