The World Communion of Reformed Churches invites its member churches and partners around the world to join the Swiss Protestant Church in prayer on Friday, 9 January 2026, a National Day of Mourning in Switzerland following the tragic fire in Crans-Montana.
This day has been set apart by the Swiss churches, in cooperation with the Federal Council, as a time for remembrance, silence, and communal prayer. At 14:00 (2:00 p.m.) local time, bells will ring throughout the country, calling people to pause and to hold in prayer those whose lives have been profoundly affected by this disaster.
As a global communion bound together in Christ, we are invited to stand in spiritual solidarity with those who grieve the loss of loved ones, with those who are injured or traumatised, and with all whose sense of safety and belonging has been shaken. We remember also those who continue to serve in the midst of crisis — emergency responders, medical and psychological caregivers, pastoral workers, volunteers, and public leaders — and we give thanks for their dedication and courage.
We encourage our churches to mark this moment through prayer, silence, worship, or the ringing of bells where possible, joining the Swiss churches in creating space for grief, compassion, and hope. May our shared prayer be a sign of communion across borders, witnessing to God’s presence in times of sorrow and to the hope that sustains us even in loss.
May the God of comfort draw near to all who mourn, grant strength to the weary, wisdom to those who lead, and peace to communities seeking healing and renewal.
