The World Communion of Reformed Churches invites member churches and partners to join a National Faith Call to Action following the tragic killing of Alex Jeffrey Pretti in Minnesota by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Pretti was a 37-year-old intensive care nurse at the Minneapolis Veterans Affairs Medical Center, known for his compassion and commitment to caring for others. His life and death have deeply affected communities and raised urgent concerns about justice, accountability and the protection of human life.

On Sunday, Jan. 25, at 8 p.m. ET, people of faith across the United States will gather to lament, pray and take action. Churches are invited to unite in prayer to mourn the life of Pretti and all lives lost through immigration enforcement, seek justice, healing and protection for vulnerable communities, and commit to faithful action and accountability as an expression of Christian witness.

As faith communities respond, they also draw strength from prayers and statements offered by other churches. In a statement following the killing, the United Church of Christ prayed, “We pray for the city of Minneapolis, for its leaders and for clergy and spiritual leaders who are offering care to this city that continues to experience violence, tyranny and oppression in the presence and actions of ICE agents. We pray for an end to the violence and hatred unleashed on immigrant communities and pray safety for those most vulnerable, even as we pray for those who seek to care for those whose lives are threatened by the presence of these federal agents.”

“As a global Reformed communion, we are called to stand with those who suffer, to speak truth in love, and to embody God’s compassion, dignity and peace,” said the Rev. Karen Georgia Thompson, president of the World Communion of Reformed Churches.

Churches are encouraged to hold prayers, vigils or moments of reflection in solidarity.
