The World Communion of Reformed Churches, in solidarity with our sisters and brothers in South Sudan, calls its member churches and partners to prayerful compassion and active solidarity with the people of South Sudan, who are enduring profound and escalating suffering from violence, displacement, hunger, and political deadlock.
South Sudan faces a deepening humanitarian crisis marked by renewed armed clashes, political paralysis, and widespread displacement that has pushed hundreds of thousands from their homes and disrupted access to life-saving services. Fighting in Jonglei and other regions has displaced tens of thousands of civilians and cut off essential humanitarian access, forcing families into ever more precarious conditions. Food insecurity and malnutrition are widespread—millions face crisis-level hunger, and children remain at extreme risk without therapeutic care. Access to health services is severely constrained amid outbreaks of disease and the closure of vital facilities.
As a global communion committed to justice, peace, and the flourishing of all people, we recognize that the realities facing South Sudan cannot be separated from histories of exclusion, political marginalization, and unequal power that continue to shape conflict, governance, and international relations in the region. Faithful discipleship calls us not only to pray, but to speak truthfully about the roots of injustice and to advocate for peace, dignity, and the protection of all civilians.
Let us pray together:
Loving God,
We lift up the people of South Sudan—
for those caught in violence and displacement; for families who have lost homes, loved ones, and livelihoods; for children at risk of hunger and illness.
Holy Spirit of Peace,
We pray for an end to violence and for the restoration of justice—that leaders may be guided toward dialogue, reconciliation, and inclusive governance; that political deadlock would give way to cooperation for the common good.
God of Compassion,
We pray for humanitarian access and sustenance—that barriers to life-saving food, medicine, and essential services would be removed; that responses to hunger and health crises would be strengthened and sustained.
Source of all comfort,
We pray for those who suffer in silence—for the displaced, the malnourished, the bereaved, and the forgotten; may they know hope, care, and the presence of Your steadfast love.
Empower us, O God,
To act with courage and humility—to accompany those in suffering, to advocate for peace, to challenge systems that perpetuate injustice, and to work for the flourishing of all people in South Sudan and across the world.
Amen.
